Praveen Kumar was the joint highest wicket-taker in the 2004–05 Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s domestic 50-over tournament. Praveen made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India against Pakistan in November 2007 at Jaipur.

In 2008, he played a key role in India’s win in the Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia, known for his swing bowling and his duels with Ricky Ponting. From 2008 to 2010, Praveen became India’s leading opening bowler in ODIs. Although selected for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, he missed out due to injury and was replaced by Sreesanth. He made his Test debut in June 2011 against the West Indies and took a five-wicket haul during India’s 2011 England tour.

Praveen played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and took a hat-trick in 2010. He also hit one of the joint longest sixes in IPL history at 124 meters. After RCB, he played for Kings XI Punjab from 2011 to 2013. Though unsold in the 2014 auction, Mumbai Indians later signed him as a replacement for the injured Zaheer Khan.

In 2015, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Praveen for 220 lakh Indian rupees. He later played for Gujarat Lions from 2016 to 2017, which was his last IPL appearance.
