Gukesh hails from a Telugu-speaking family with roots in the Godavari delta region of Andhra Pradesh. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is an ear, nose, and throat surgeon, while his mother, Dr. Padma, is a microbiologist. Gukesh’s interest in chess began at the age of seven, and with the support of his parents, he pursued his passion. He studies at Velammal Vidyalaya, Mel Ayanambakkam, Chennai.
Career
Gukesh’s rapid rise in the chess world started with his impressive performances in youth competitions. In 2015, he won the Under-9 section of the Asian School Chess Championships, followed by victories in the Under-12 category of the 2018 World Youth Chess Championships. He earned the Grandmaster title in January 2019, at just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days old, making him the second-youngest Grandmaster at the time.
In 2024, Gukesh achieved one of his biggest career milestones by winning the Candidates Tournament, becoming the youngest-ever contender for the World Chess Championship. This victory has solidified his place among the top players in the world.
